Vegetarian Recipe
6 to 7 medium-size fresh tomatoes, diced* In a large bowl, combine tomatoes, onion, cilantro, garlic, chile pepper, salt, and lime juice. If your salsa mixture is too hot, add some additional chopped tomato. If not hot enough, carefully add a little more chile pepper. Let sit for 1 hour for the flavors to combine. NOTE: If too much tomato juice settles at the bottom, just pour some off before tossing with the pasta. Remember that the pasta will absorb juice as it sits. Cook pasta according to package directions. When pasta is done, drain and rinse with cold water; draining well before adding the tomato mixture. Transfer drained pasta into a large serving bowl. Toss together pasta and the tomato mixture. Just before serving, grate Parmesan cheese over the top. Always serve pasta salads at room temperature so the flavors will really shine. Food Inc Reflection
When it comes to the way the animals were killed, I felt guilty for the amount of meat I consume. But when it came down to Kevin's death, a young boy who had no knowledge of harmful diseases in his food, I wonder about how careful the companies who look out for health risks are. I felt that when Kevin's mother wanted to make a change about the situation, the process of trying to make people aware about the situation took longer than it should have. What is it going to take for the government to stand up for this food crisis? Another death? It just doesn't make sense to me how Kevin's Law took so long to become a law and how his mother's only wish wasn't granted when she wanted it.
I think that for a very long time we've been oblivious to what goes into our bodies as consumers. However, now that we've been educated and are aware of the effects of eating unhealthy foods, we are able to lessen our consumption of some foods. So when I watch videos like Food Inc. I see myself looking at labels more, consuming less unhealthy foods because I do care about my body. The thing I find difficult is sticking with this, other than being disciplined, what are other things that can be done to continue with a lifestyle such as this?

-The world is finding itself nearing maximum capacity in not only space but also in many commodities. Oil is largely the primary commodity running short. We are experiencing the same situation with the world's mines. There is not a shortage of ore but we just can't affordably get at it. Essentially this means that there is only a limited supply available at affordable prices. The higher the cost of supplies the fewer people that can afford it; this will of course increase the supplies at unaffordable prices. The value of the US dollar has been declining steadily over the last few years. The US is now being outbid by other countries when trying to obtain commodities. They range from natural disasters such as drought, flood, or fungus, to political disasters such as civil conflict, to misguided economic policies such as price controls- all of which discourage production of essential foods.

They test the limits of growing seasons and moisture-temperature tolerances of particular crop varieties. -The food crisis equation has three main components. First, life-styles, incomes and social organization determine levels of consumption. Second, the technologies in use determine both the extent to which human activities damage or sustain the environment and the amount of waste associated with a given level of consumption. Poverty may prevent the adoption of more appropriate technologies that could halt or slow down environmental degradation. These two factors determine the impact on individuals.
-Land fragmentation affects food production and is a direct result of rapid population growth in many poor countries. Often landholdings which are too small to provide a tolerable livelihood have been turned into part-time farms, with some household members (usually the women and children) staying at home to tend crops while others (often the men) migrate in search of wage employment.
-Sustainable development strategies which combat soil erosion and impoverishment, deforestation, falling agricultural output, and poor water management should also be implemented, as should rural agricultural extension schemes which provide credit, seeds, fertilizers and advice to poorer farmers, regardless of whether they are men or women. -When reading through this article, a statement that stuck with me because of all the various factors that affect population through health risks was this: "The spectrum of health-endangering environmental problems has become wider, and potentially much more serious, than was evident two decades ago. It includes greenhouse-related climate change, thinning of stratospheric ozone, land degradation and topsoil loss, depletion of groundwater, reduction in genetic and ecosystem diversity and acidification of waterways and soils."
- My thoughts: Population is constantly affected by one of these things, whether it's playing a role at a different point in time around the world or simply growing into a bigger problem. Throughout the course of time, these problems trace back to how much the earth can hold also known as the earth's carrying capacity. It's also stated by the UN demographers that by 2030 we will reach 9 billion people, moving up to 11-12 billion in the following century. Out of this major increase, 90% of it will occur in poor third world countries where life is hard enough to sustain. With these statistics in mind, it seems natural that we'd transform some of our selfish ways, but like I said before unless it affects our lives personally major change won't take place.

This article showed a lot of facts about how the climate change will affect the growth of plants. I think that this source will be helpful in determining what will happen in the senior project. This article discussed how the climate change would affect the world’s food supply. It stated that overall, developed countries would see an increase and benefit from the climate change, while undeveloped won’t. It also discussed the regions of the world that would benefit which is at higher latitudes while the lower latitudes would be affecting negatively. I think that this article definitely was very useful and has many facts that I hope to implement in my senior project.

In this article it quotes, "Whether the expansion of food production can keep pace with the population growth over the long term, remains the crux of the sustainability debate precipitated by Malthus almost two centuries ago." To me, I look at this quote and question whether there will be enough food to sustain the population. At the rate we're going now, we're constantly wasting perfectly good food because it doesn't have a negative affect on our lives (yet). We have to put into perspective how much food we actually need for survival rather than just want what we want when we want it. We can either save food for the next person who needs it or save it for later. Instead of focusing on the now, we need to look forward and stop waiting for wake-up calls. (It's difficult but it's not impossible)!

When reading through this article, a statement that stuck with me because of all the various factors that affect population through health risks was this: "The spectrum of health-endangering environmental problems has become wider, and potentially much more serious, than was evident two decades ago. It includes greenhouse-related climate change, thinning of stratospheric ozone, land degradation and topsoil loss, depletion of groundwater, reduction in genetic and ecosystem diversity and acidification of waterways and soils." Population is constantly affected by one of these things, whether it's playing a role at a different point in time around the world or simply growing into a bigger problem. Throughout the course of time, these problems trace back to how much the earth can hold also known as the earth's carrying capacity. It's also stated by the UN demographers that by 2030 we will reach 9 billion people, moving up to 11-12 billion in the following century. Out of this major increase, 90% of it will occur in poor third world countries where life is hard enough to sustain. With these statistics in mind, it seems natural that we'd transform some of our selfish ways, but like I said before unless it affects our lives personally major change won't take place.

The Effects of Climate Change on Food production
Depending on how balanced the climate conditions are, that can have severe impact on the production of food. Because of the uncertainties of the climate, cropland reductions vary from 10 to 50 percent. According to this article and the opinions of David Pimentel, global warming could alter the production of rice, wheat, corn, soybeans, and potatoes. This change will cause regional variations in North America because we are the main food grower. By 2030 it is predicted that atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations will double pre-industrial concentrations while other greenhouse gases will increase substantially, and the temperatures in North America will rise two degrees. The farming industry will not do as well because agricultural production will be affected by both the severity and pace of climate change. If the change was slow and not as rapid, then crops wouldn't suffer as much as they would with such uncontrollable climate affects. Carbon dioxide as well as ultraviolet radiation play a major part in the livelihood of crops. Through the release of chlorofluorocarbons, it has depleted a good amount of the o-zone layer, making it easier for plants to catch various diseases. Also, with increased carbon dioxide levels, some plants do not benefit well from this while very few can.

According to the U.S Global Change Research Program, it stated that, “Climate change has had an impact on American farmers, ranchers, rural land owners, and foresters, and will continue to do so, through its influence on production, distribution, and yields.” Which leaves the reader wondering, so what? Well, if you truly care about living, these things are only here to help not hinder. CO2 levels are rising, why? Because of us and the different types of gases we let out into our atmosphere. The crops that are grown will eventually fail, because their existence relies on our choices.

According to this cite, before 2100 grain will have to double to 4 billion tons a year. Between now and mid-century, higher temperatures in northerly latitudes will probably expand lands that are available for farming. But even with these positive gains, they will most likely be canceled due to agricultural declines in the tropics. Higher temperatures can also cause outbreaks of weeds and pests as well as affect the way a plant looks. Because of temperature differences, pests that are very active during the winter are expected to improve making them able to attack the spring crops and once again causing major food shortage.
Incorporating this information into my senior project:
I plan to speak about the effects climate change has on food and ways we can help this epidemic from spreading further.

Growing Sunflowers
Sunflowers like to be out during warm weather conditions.
These flowers were a main food crop for native people. Today, they are still grown for food. Their seeds are pressed into vegetable oil.
It's good to plant these seeds during the spring time. It's better to start indoors so that heavy dew or frost doesn't get on the tiny seedlings.
Sunflowers need well-cultivated (average to rich soil) Sandy soils are NOT recommended
It's both a fruit and a vegetable.
They are grown around the world.
Sunflower seeds are high in protein.
Depending on the type of sunflower it is, they can grow up to 20 feet tall
It was used to create dyes used for clothing, They were also used medicinally for ointments for snakebite remedies.
A screen is needed to cover these flowers because various creatures like to come and pick out the seeds off the sunflowers.
For the giant sunflowers, space them three feet apart in rows three to four feet apart.
They take 70-90 days to mature
They will grow their best in full sun
To harvest: Wait till flower has dried and extract the seeds by rubbing two flower heads together.

Population's Affects On Food!

In this particular reading, it went into detail about the future of the world's food supply as well as population growth through graphs and statistics. The graphs explained what is estimated in the future. According to this site, it is estimated that approximately one acre of land is lost due to urbanization and highway construction alone for every person added to the United States population. Meaning that only 0.6 acres of farmland would be available to grow food for each American in 2050, as opposed to the 1.8 acres per capita available today. Also, because America is the “World's largest food exporter,” the future survival of millions of people around the world isn't promised if food exports from the U.S. were to come to a halt.

A quote that I thought spoke true to the fact that we take food for granted is this, “It is the simplest, most natural of acts, akin to breathing and walking upright.” It's so true we don't even think about where the food were eating came from all we care about is how delicious it is and ceasing our hunger. It's also stated that in the past decade, the world has been consuming more food than it has been producing. We are selfish creatures that have a hard time looking beyond the “Now!” With the world population spiraling toward 9 billion, by the mid-century, experts say food production must be doubled by 2030. Meaning we need another green revolution-in half the original time.

As I read this article, I gathered a more bias viewpoint concerning food scarcity. Both the World Bank and the United Nations say that 1 to 2 billion humans are now malnourished, which indicates a combination of insufficient food, low incomes, and an inadequate distribution of food. So basically depending on your status, the amount of food a person is able to intake is what its based on. It's also stated that 99 percent of the world's food supply comes from the land, while less than 1 percent comes from the oceans. With the growth of the human population it makes it harder to divide crops equally. A fact I've never heard of that is also another prime resource used for production is fossil energy. When it comes to developing third world countries, fossil energy is mainly what's used primarily for fertilizers and irrigation to help maintain yields rather than reduce human labor.
